WSPMA Legislative Update

Gail Toraason McGaffick, JD, Legislative Attorney and Melanie Stewart, JD, Legislative Lobbyist

The 2019 legislative session began on January 14, 2019, the second Monday in January. Because bills could be prefiled as early as December 1, 2018, by the time the session started in mid-January, there were almost 300 bills formally introduced on the first day. And as of February 19, the Legislature is considering over 2,000 individual bills, an astonishing number generated, in part, because of strong Democrat majorities in both the House and Senate for the first time in this decade.

Our work, on behalf of WSPMA, is to review every bill title for those of potential interest. We then closely review those bills, and together with the WSPMA Board and Legislative Committee we determine which bills are most important, and what position WSPMA will take to include pro, con, or neutral.

For those bills of most interest to WSPMA, we track their progress through the session, to include attending public hearings, testifying, reviewing amendments as the legislation progresses, and watching floor action if the legislation is considered by the entire House or Senate. During this process we also network with other provider groups.

Key topics for the 2019 session include:

At the end of the session, we will provide details of relevant legislation that passed. The 2019 Regular Session will adjourn on April 28.
